Handwoven Hemp Fabric Vintage Stripe

$26.00

Gorgeous textural vintage hemp fabric - all natural, hand woven using traditional methods by Hmong villagers in rural Vietnam.

Measuring 30cm wide, sold by the 1/2 metre, this thick woven, undyed taupe toned fabric makes a beautiful table runner or placements. An inspiring addition to the craft stash, lovely for slow stitch and sewing projects.

This unique, labour-intensive textile is sourced directed from elderly Hmong women in a small village in Northern Vietnam, ensuring a fair trade price goes directly to the makers and back to their impoverished communities.

Hemp is grown by the Hmong tribeswomen, dried, then the fibre stripped from the stem and pounded, boiled, spun and coated with wax before being strung on an old wooden loom and woven into the finished fabric. All year around the tribeswomen can be seen with hemp fibres wound around their hands, using what spare time they have to connect the separate fibres to make one use-able thread.

The rustic blue pattern is achieved by combining naturally dyed blue threads into the weave. This indigo dye is obtained from plants also grown by the tribe on the edge of their steep rice terraced mountainsides.

Rambutan Vietnam seek to bring rare, vintage, unique artisan crafts from the tribes people of Vietnam to the rest of the world, hoping to keep alive some of the traditions and crafts of these enduring people.

Width: 30cm / Price is for 1/2 metre, sold in 1/2 metre increments.
