Shigaraki Pottery Plates

$65.00

Beautiful Shikaraki ware plates, simple lines, matte black, functional pieces to enhance your home.

With a long pottery tradition Shigaraki ware is produced in Shigaraki Town, Shiga Prefecture, one of the six oldest kilns in Japan. This region produces high quality clay resulting in pottery with a simple, soft and warm expression.

Sold individually, choose from three serving plate/dishes:

Large Deep measures 25.5cm diameter × 4.5cm high
Medium Flat measures 22cm diameter x 3cm high
Small Deep measures 13.5cm diameter x 3.5cm high

Each dish is made by hand, with conditions such as temperature and humidity varying during firing, resulting in individual variations in each piece.

Shigaraki Ware Care

Pottery is highly water absorbent, so before use, it is recommended to apply a "sealing treatment" to prevent stains and odours.
1. Fill a pot with enough rice brine (or water and potato starch or flour) to cover the dish.
2. Bring to a boil, then simmer over low heat for about 20 minutes. Grey spots may appear on the vessel surface due to the penetration of water, this will return to normal when the vessel dries.
3. Allow to cool in situ, then rinse with water and dry thoroughly.

Before use: Soak dish in water before each use to reduce the possibility of food juices, oil stains and odours adhering to the surface.
After use: Avoid soaking in dirty water which vessel may absorb, leading to stains and odours. Gentle handwash with a soft cloth. Dry well before storing.

Not suitable for dishwashers, microwave ovens or direct heat.
